Box Color vs Salon Color
I am going to be honest. I have tried box color before…to varying results. One time the color was no where near what the box promised, another time it was the right color but washed out completely in 3 weeks and yet another time it turned my whole head orange. I do understand the allure. It is cheap, fast and you can do it in the privacy of your own home, on your own time-table. But, unless you have the exact type of hair that box is made for, the results are very inconsistent.
The first major problem is the Volume of the Peroxide. In boxed color, they give you a standard 20 Volume. Well, if you have dark brown hair and want to go lighter, 20 Volume may not be strong enough, which is why we don’t always get the color promised. If you are going darker, then 20 Volume may be too strong and you are unnecessarily damaging your hair. A trained colorist will be able to give you the proper Peroxide mixture that will achieve the right color and tone, without the overkill.
Another issue is conditioning. Boxed color offers some conditioning to protect and repair damage, but it is done in a general way. A salon colorist will be able to customize the conditioning to your needs. Do you need that deep conditioning mask or just a light color protecting conditioner? An expert can pair you up with the right formulas to make sure your hair is protected.
Basically, what this all boils down to is customization. Boxed color is great for a specific type of hair and to do a specific kind of job. There are hundreds of different variables that boxed color just cannot address. Our trained stylists and colorists are here to make sure you get the color you want, help game plan how to protect your hair from fading and to repair and strengthen your hair.
